Sustainable tourism is a major industry for local development and environmental conservation in the Tumbes Region, where Karoon operates. Karoon has played a key role in the implementation of the Fregata Project in the mangroves of Puerto Pizarro. The project significantly promoted ecotourism of one of the most important tourist destinations in Tumbes.
The project was designed to know the Fregata magnificens through a scientific investigation that provided information on the behavior of the colony, feeding sessions, travels and mating in the single reproductive colony in the mangroves of Puerto Pizarro.
The results obtained from the scientific research were published in a book that was officially launched by Karoon in November 2015. The book is a valuable tool for Peruvian universities, the government and tourism agencies learn about this fascinating species and to have a better understanding of their value in the ecosystem of the region.
Educational campaigns with secondary and university students, as well as the training of local tourism guides, have been positive in the raising of environmental awareness about the importance of the Fregata and their habitat. This project promoted an increase in the number of visitors to the mangroves of Puerto Pizarro, which boosted the local economy.
